Looking for organic, gluten free high tea, followed by grass fed steak?
If Alice was a gluten-free carnivore she would have fell through the door of Agape, not Wonderland.
About a year ago, I was utterly delighted to find a place in Sydney offering organic high tea with a gluten free option. Undeterred by the Wonderland-esq remote location, I called and emailed with my reservation request. “Tea for 10 for my birthday”, my email and voicemail gushed. Be patient people – Lyn, the owner eventually responded a week later, following an overseas trip.
Since then I have been to the restaurant, which is the only fully-organic restaurant in Sydney, numerous times. The steak is Divine!! Guilty secret – I’m back on meat as I’m pregnant and had an iron deficiency. Whereas I never fancied meat, the baby seems to love it. Eeek!
Agape is an old fashioned kind of place where the organic bubbles flow freely. If you arrive before 1pm you are likely to be the only table in the house. You have to choose your high tea menu in advance. The Little Luxuries menu offers spelt pies, chicken tarragon sandwiches, spelt scones and more cakes than you could shake your spoon at. Om nom!
Some of my friends arrived early and were about to turn on their heals, as the place was closed and looked deserted. If this happens to you, persevere; there is no sign of life from the outside. Luckily the owner arrived promptly at our reservation time to turn on the lights and let us in.
The dinner menu is truly exceptional, the food is reasonably priced for organic and offers a range of fish, meat, spelt pizzas and mushroom truffle risotto for the veggies.
The high teas only run at certain times of year so check the website for dates.
