My Happy Place
West End is Brisbane’s bustling alternative hub inhabited by yuppies, hipsters, hippies, students and artists of all kinds. Away from the central Boundary Street there are little wonders just waiting to be discovered: amazing coffee, cool bars, cheap and delicious food and excellent shopping. Despite the relaxed nature of the locals, each venture projects an air of working hard to achieve excellence.
Amongst these new upstarts is an old favourite which remains as successful as ever despite its end of times (if you believe everything you read on the internet): Avid Reader bookstore and cafe. A pillar of the strong local community, Avid Reader is your best option for a wide range of books, including publications by local characters, or and for ordering more obscure titles, a tasteful selection of music, DVDs and magazines, strange stationery and oddities.
The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and able to assist when you have decided to buy an age-appropriate book for a 16-month-old girl. The cafe caters for book clubs, catch-ups and solo visitors with aplomb, serving sandwiches, salads and decent coffee. Avid runs a busy calendar of events, from book launches and signings to sale nights and live Radio National Big Ideas program recordings. If you have time to kill, want a quiet place for reflection, need to buy a present or – apparently unheard-of in this digital day and age – want to buy books, look no further.
