Redfern, Sydney – KABOOM goes the explosion of cafes that are popping up in Redfern!
But how do you tell the cafes that are the ‘gold-dusted cappuccinos’ from the ones that are the ‘lukewarm flat whites’ in this thriving cafe scene?
You trust a local Urban Usher to test them all for you, which is exactly what I’ve done!
My pick out of the bunch is Bean and Berry. This cafe has nailed the formula: great food and coffee, friendly staff, the afternoon sun and an old-meets-new decor where you can settle in and relax for a few hours…
Bean and Berry’s corner position gives it a generous footpath dining area on both streets, with small tables shaded by large red umbrellas. As you wander through the French door entrance, you feel tiny under high ceilings. The bench seats next to the huge windows are ideal to perch on as you watch the mix of new and old residents and visitors walk by.
The menu contains the usual suspects but it also has a couple of unique items such as Oma’s coconut cake which is melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The prices are modest keeping the ‘fern down to earth as it should be. This is a feature that seems other new cafes in the area are overlooking. Please drop in soon and support this newcomer.
