I Can’t Let You Go
by Jayde! If you’re a foodie in Melbourne – which is about 99% of Melburnians – at least one meal over the course of your weekend will focus around the very latest/newest café/restaurant/bar on the block. Food has always been the jewel in Melbourne’s crown – you are guaranteed diversity and excellence. With so much on offer, competition is fierce in terms of menu and ambience. Proprietors are taking real risks in terms of creating cutting-edge and unique dishes that will get taste buds buzzing.
One of the more recent food trends to hit Melbourne is modern American. There’s Fitzroy’s Belle’s Diner, American bars The Beaufort (Carlton) and Kodiak Club (Fitzroy). The latest addition is the Candied Bakery across the Westgate in Spotswood. To be fair, Candied isn’t full American – it’s billed as an Aussie bakery with both American and European elements. With a minimalist, funky modern décor, it’s more of a bakery café than a pure bakery, with plenty of space and comfort to eat in.
The menu is worth the trip over the bridge. It’s not extensive but it’s definitely different and very cost-effective. As well as slabs of foccacia and artisan breads, Candied offers hot, oozing pies of various fillings, Croque Monsieurs, stuffed croissants and gourmet toasties for your savoury lover. For the sweet tooth, try the amazing brownie with a crushed pretzel base, or the crème brulee tart or even the marshmallow choc-chip salted biscuit. Un-be-lieve-able! Top it off with a shake – we tried the Milo, but the more adventurous can supp on the Apple Pie flavour.
A great spot to stop off if you’re looking for a day trip to Williamstown.
