Craft on Draft – by Bec!
..or draft a craft? Whichever, whatever, doesn’t matter. Say something to that effect and your friendly bearded hipster beer-puller at Tippler’s Tap will give you a chuckle in return. These guys live and breathe craft beer and are too happy to give you the run down on the beer offerings at this hidden-away gem of a pub.
Most recently, I enjoyed a coldie or two at this American inspired tavern in Newstead. Apparently it is just like the real thing, with low ceilings, nook & crannies and dim lighting with real yankee fare. The 1kg of Buffalo Wings are amazing. Do it. And of course the beer, the main event. I chose the raspberry ale concoction made down the road at Burp-engary (mind the pun). What a delight. First sip and I was hooked. My buddy enjoyed a lychee infused drop, which really hit the spot. This place ensures beer-drinking is an art, not a XXXX bogan bog-standard pub (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
No beer is made on the premises but they stock their beverages from a wide range of suppliers from Burps to Burls and from across the seas in Belgs (Belgium for the unacquainted). A chalkboard has the latest on offer ensuring an every-changing menu. There is something for everyone’s tastes, but if you’re too bamboozled with what to choose, go the tasting plate – a small sample of a few.
Next up, within walking distance, is Green Beacon. Another craft beer pub, but with real brewing on site. Massive vats line the back wall of this warehouse style place, which really sets the scene. High ceilings and plenty of room, the Beacon is a top place to enjoy a fine beer on tap. One key player here is the Cross Knot Kolsch, which was recommended to us lasses who prefer something light and easy on the palate. Seafood and cheese boards rein supreme on the menu here, with only some carb tummy fillers, which was what we were chasing. So a cob loaf of bread and butter was enjoyed by all (one each, that is). Something of note is the soap in the loos, it’s made of beer!
