West End, Brisbane – When I want comfy couches, dappled sunlight, gentle music, quiet service and curiosities galore to go with my breakfast, Depo at West End is the place for me. Depo can’t be typecast as the introvert’s paradise though, as with its fully stocked bar, gold glittery wall and late hours, it easily transforms into whatever I need it to be.
My recent visit was as a solo diner but a very large group is easily welcomed. My desire for something simple this time was satisfied with light rye toast served with butter, mustard and slices of aged gouda but had I felt like something more spectacular, the corn fritters with smoked trout, rocket, capsicum and poached egg, or perhaps the wholemeal pancakes with peppered strawberries, salted macadamia caramel and lemon ricotta would have served me well. Similarly, the farmer’s breakfast with potato, onion, bacon, capsicum mixed together and served with a poached egg which I enjoyed on my last visit was thoroughly pleasing.
Depo sources all ingredients locally and the menu varies regularly depending on what is in season. A special mention must be made of the baked goods which are supplied by Chouquette, the French boulangerie patisserie in New Farm. Depo has everything I need, whichever “I” I’m currently being.
