Four in Hand – By Piero!
Gastro pubs are a great English institution, combining the relaxed atmosphere of a cozy watering hole and the joys of refined, often high-end food and wine.
Long, delicious boozy gastro pub lunches in West London are some of my most treasured memories from the Big Smoke.
My heart filled with joy when I realised that Sydney has got its own gastro pub scene, and Paddington’s Four In Hand is certainly up there with the best of such Sydney offerings.
Whilst this place is nestled and hidden in the back streets of Paddington, its reputation is no secret among foodies and locals.
The front room is a lively pub. Rarely for Australian pubs – which are often enormous and lacking intimacy, the Four In Hand is smaller and more inclusive. It is ideal for winter Sundays or a cheeky two on the way back from the beach.
If you get hungry and the delicious pub food on offer just won’t do, then the restaurant next door is a great higher end option. Two hats* no less.
It is a bit strange walking from a rowdy bar into the low lit, romantic and sophisticated ambiance of the restaurant, but somehow the transition is not awkward. This place was awarded two hats for a very good reason, and that reason is fantastic food and a fitting wine selection to go with it. The staff are friendly but not intrusive and the whole meal feels like a treat. Four In Hand is one of the best reasons to get lost in the back streets of Paddo.
