Rock n Roll Pizza – Frankies Pizza (Sydney)

Sydney, CBD – Who doesn’t love a funky bar? When my lovely flatmate told me of a bar and restaurant in Sydney CBD called Frankies Pizza, it gave me a good excuse to get a group of girlfriends together for an after work drinks or two.

When I discovered that Frankie’s Pizza is the baby of  the owners of Shady Pines and Baxter Inn (two of my other favourites Sydney bars,) I knew I was in for a treat.

Frankie’s Pizza is located on Hunter Street, look out for the flashy neon sign, as the entrance can be easily missed. Stepping down the stairs you could easily think you have gone back in time to a small Italian pizzeria in the olden days of New York. Red and white checked table clothes greet you, garlic hangs from the ceiling, candles burn from old wine bottles and old pictures from Sinatra to the mafia adorn the walls. Here you will find the cosy couples sitting around the tables and suits sitting around the bar, no doubt debating between the 50 of the beers on offer.

But don’t stop here, keep walking through the dark, double swing doors through to the dive bar. Here you will find all the ‘cool’ kids, the Surry Hills/Newtown crowd who are so excited to finally have a bar of their own style in the City. The scene is totally different in this bar, a juke box and pool tables fill one section of the bar and great 70/80 music blasts throughout.

Feeling peckish? Well the menu has one item, and one item only and that is Pizza!!! I definitely recommend the Spinach Pizza with Boccocini – and this recommendation comes from a non-vegetarian! If beer is not your thing, there is a good array of wines on offer and don’t miss the frozen margarita (I definitely didn’t).

What I loved the most about Frankie is the fantastic service from the smiling bartenders, bearded, tattooed and all! This kind of old fashion hospitality  is so often missed in the CBD. Oh and Frankie’s Pizza is open 7 days a week from 4pm to 4am. Finally, a  late night bar in the city that also serves food. I had my expectation high for Frankie’s Pizza, and boy was I not disappointed.

Visit: 50 Hunter St, Sydney, NSW, 2000; Open: 7 days a week, 4pm-4amWallet: Beers from $8, Pizza slices from $5. (Sorry! Frankies doesn’t have a website yet)
