Melbourne CBD – Ok, let’s play a quick hypothetical word association game. If I said “eggs”, and you responded with “no thanks”, I’d tell you to go back to bed and call me when you were feeling better. If you answered with “ooh scrambled please with a side of bacon and toast” I’d tell you to hop on down to Grasshopper’s Feast and chow down!
Grasshopper’s to locals, (well to me anyway), is the classic Melbourne cliché, a laneway café that spills onto the footpath. Not only does it offer incredible coffee and a breakfast menu that leaves you anxious that you’ll have food envy if you pick the wrong thing, the people watching and eavesdropping is amazing! On just one visit I heard a couple breaking up, a woman chatting about her cheating boyfriend and saw Marcia Hines walk passed, all this while sipping on my soy latte.
Stand out choices for breakfast are the zucchini and corn fritters (pictured) and the terracotta pot (3 eggs baked in Napoli sauce with chorizo, drool). The service is very quick, so even if you do want to add a side of toast last minute it won’t take long. The kitchen is very accommodating if you wanted to add or subtract anything to your meal, there’s no chance of side-eye here.
