Freemantle, Perth – I love meat. And I note with some interest, my inclination to preach the wonders of slow cooked beef cheeks, or sticky Asian style beef ribs or lamb shanks! Ok, so I may be a carnivore… But what about my readers who have a tendency for herbivoreism? (I just made that word up)
Introduce Habitue, a Mediterranean restaurant that carefully circumnavigates a menu overloaded with meat options and delivers some cracking seafood and vegetarian share plates…. And I mean proper share plates. Not the kind where you have to buy two share plates for two people to ensure you have one chicken wing each.
Habitue delivers an eclectic vibe in an old weatherboard cottage in North Fremantle that plays live jazz on Sunday afternoons. The food doesn’t attempt to be wanky and instead delivers something unique and innovative for the Perth dinning scene.
Vegetarian options include beetroot, smoked curd and hazelnuts; roast carrots, coriander and almonds; or cos lettuce, radish and buttermilk dressing…. Potentially questionable dishes on paper, but in reality are clever cooking that will raise an eyebrow in delight.
In true Mediterranean style, the seafood consideration of mussel and octopus escabeche served with crisps on the side is an incredible dish that must be sampled if it’s on the menu.
Habitue doesn’t bother with foams, dehydrators or micro herbs… It doesn’t do fads! It simply delivers some innovative and exciting food on well-proportioned servings.
Oh, and for the meat lovers, you’ll always sniff out a few surprises including the Habitue charcuterie.
