Brisbane icon and Usher, Di shares her perfect Brisbane day, top tip for city visitors and how she discovered an old friend through Urban Usher!
I love Brisbane because… there are pockets of natural bushland very close to the city so you can have all the city benefits without actually feeling like you are out of the countryside!
My ideal Brisbane day… is crisp Autumn or early Spring weather with a morning wander from one end of Paddington to the other looking in all the cottage industry shops. Coffee en route – try Ruby Cafe, Sassafras or the Lark. Start at the Bardon end and finish up at the Barracks as it is downhill that way! Catch a movie at the Palace Barracks cinema, with glass of wine of course, then to one of the Barracks or Caxton St restaurants for a long lunch.
I started writing for Urban Usher… Because my daughter Jayde wrote for the Melbourne blog and I wanted to do the same for Brisbane. Randomly, I also recognised one of the Sydney Ushers, Dani, who was one of my husband’s students many years ago!
When you come to Brisbane… Take a City Cat ride along river. Disembark at South Bank for wander through (not forgetting to mention the free viewings at the Art Gallery & GOMA) and across the Goodwill Bridge into the QUT precinct. The new Science Building is worth seeing with its huge interactive screens. follow the paved paths past Old Government House and the Botanic Gardens, stopping for coffee at one of the many University coffee shops. Take a guided tour of Parliament House just at the George St entrance to QUT. Then either walk down George St to the city or take the Free Loop (red) bus if you are tired of walking. For dinner, definitely head to Litse (2013 Restaurant of the Year for Brisbane and the Darling Downs) or Bardon’s Paris-Inspired Lutece Bistro and Wine Bar.
