Fitzroy North, Melbourne – Want to know where the cool cats in Melbourne hang out? North of the river, obviously. More specifically, in a bar that has an incredibly colourful and underworld past. There’s a billiard table, a fireplace, homely chairs and dark wooden tables, jazz music humming away in the background and soft lighting from scattered lamps and candles. There’s patrons nestling retro cocktails, others poring over the extensive wine list, while the bravest souls beeline for the absinthe. If the ex-illegal casino walls could talk, you wouldn’t so much care, as the crowd who hang out here have just as interesting stories to tell I’m sure.
Step inside and feel the all-round warmth – from the open fire, the whisky or the wine, and not least the passionate staff. This is a place where you have the space to truly settle in and forget your troubles.
If you come just for a drink and get carried away (and with a 200-strong and growing wine list, how could you not), stay for dinner. A full menu is on offer comprising rustic, European fare; think hearty, comforting meats, terrines, fruit crumble for dessert. Alongside every dish on the menu is a well-considered wine match suggestion.
Every second Wednesday feature live performances from local artists. Needless to say there are no covers played. Come for a good time or a long time… everyone is welcome here and the cool cats won’t bite.
