Paddington, Brisbane – Our first visit to Ruby Cafe in Paddington (towards the Suncorp Stadium end) consisted in muffled sighs of pleasure while reading the menu, exaggerated eating noises to indicate pleasure at one’s food and every now and then someone chanting “ruby ruby ruby ruby ruby ruby” a la the chorus of the Kaiser Chiefs song Ruby.
Also satisfying is the extremely efficient service. Not once have I been lacking for attention, for water, for menus or had to wait for food or drinks. I’m not one to get grumpy when service is relaxed but Ruby does this so well it deserves a mention. You’d do well to visit Ruby pre-game or pre-movie, for example, to ensure a belly well satisfied in good time to move towards your next engagement.
Open for breakfast and lunch daily with dinner on Friday and Saturday, Ruby proffers standard cafe favourites without being boring. A certain bacon-and-poached-eggs-only someone is catered for with ease while the more adventurous type is satisfied by creamy truffle mushrooms on sourdough with gruyere and a poached egg. Also offering “Something leafy”, “Something sandwichie” and a truly exciting non-alcoholic beverage menu (BYO for dinner), my heart yearns to gaze at the Paddington view from Ruby’s back window again soon.
