Strut your sassy self into this well-loved café called Sassafras (defin: medicinal aromatic leaves and bark, tonic made from it). It is where the urban and chic Paddington crowd come to mingle while sipping their new-age organic teas (think Sencha Green, LSD and Brisbane Breakfast) in between mouthfuls of mince on toast or vegan carrot salads.
This place was totally in vogue ten years ago, and as I evidently discovered, still is. It is a little Queenslander cottage converted into a café that opens up to quaint patio area out the back.
Last time I went I tried the mince on toast, plus egg. It is a heifer-ty portion of meat you get, definitely breaking your 8 hour fast. But make sure a spinach leave or two sits on your fork to help cut through an otherwise bog-standard bite. The spinach, egg and roasted tomato are what takes this mince dish to a café standard. My friend enjoyed her corn cakes with hommus and tomato relish, swapping the bacon for avo. The cakes were monstrous in size both in depth and width – almost a meal for two!
I’ve also now been indoctrinated into the world of tea. My breaky friend is a bit of an organic, raw food, chai type person who informed me of LSD (Latte Soy Dandelion) chai tea benefits available at Sassafras. Not the 60’s trippin’ version, but the 10’s calming mild version. A dash of soy milk and a drizzle of honey and your mind is at ease, apparently. I’m not too sure. Maybe next time. I just stuck with my usual, cap with two thanks.
