Cottesloe, Western Australia – The name Lamont’s is synonymous with good wine and beautiful food in Western Australia.
Co-owner Kate Lamont is renowned for bending the paradigm of diners in Perth in the late 80’s. She introduced simple plates of the freshest produce available when most kitchens were hell-bent on gregarious fads aligned with the times (think prawn cocktail with too much mayo!)… essentially Kate played a large part in shaping the modern dining scene we see today.
On the first Sunday of every month, Lamont’s Wine Store in Cottesloe hosts a five course tapas dinner with eight matching wines for $85.
The trend of simple cooking has continued and I’m adamant the average punter won’t be disappointed – but let’s be honest there are plenty of establishments serving similar fare in Perth right now. What sets Lamonts apart from the rest is the paired wines. Talk about value!
My last visit, we were treated to a flight from organic wine maker, Cullens and the caliber was phenomenal. The demonstrable strength of Margaret River wines was on show with the quality Kevin John Chardonnay and Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon (which retails for around $300). The dinner is served with eight glasses that would impress even the most seasoned winey.
Even if this all sounds like a load of toss to you (but you do like wine), I’d strongly encourage a visit to Lamont’s Sunday tapas. Inhouse wine boffin, John Jens, will guide you through the tastings and provide some interesting facts along the way. It really is a great night for anyone keen to taste and to earn a little more about wine.
Lamont’s also host various tasting events throughout the year. Check their website for full details.
