Use your noodle

by Amanda!

Located just near Bunker coffee on Railway tce in Milton is Mrs Luu’s. Owned by the same family who own Vietnamese institution ‘Trang’ in West End, Mrs Luu’s brings fast, fresh and delicious lunches to the Milton dining scene. Whilst this place is not an ambient lunch venue, the food (and the crowd) speaks for itself. I have also heard on the grapevine that when Bernard Fanning is in town, Mrs Luu’s is a bit of a favourite!  [Read more…]

Noosa Beach House Bar (Noosa)

facebooktwittermailfacebooktwittermailby feather

Noosa – So apparently the creator of the Noosa Beach House Restaurant and Bar, Peter Kuruvita is a celebrity chef. To be honest I didn’t realise this until I started researching the restaurant at Noosa. With a Sri Lankan background and a recent TV series focused on Mexico I was intrigued.

Bombshell Coffee & Chocolate!

by Amanda

Hidden in a commercial street in Milton amongst auto repairers is a teeny tiny little gem.  Quite literally a little hole in the cement wall, Bunker is only noticeable due to the queue trailing out onto the footpath. Covered in ivy inside and out Bunker’s size belies its true impact. Producers of smooth coffees and divine chocolate beverages, Bunker has a loyal following.

Delicious to the very last crumb – Poppy Cakes (Brisbane)

Poppy Cakes – by Amanda!

I have had an obsession with cupcakes long before they became fashionable. Leading up to our wedding I did a considerable amount of cake research (it was tough but someone had to do it) and Poppy Cakes came out on top.  Their tagline is “New York-style cupcakes” and having tasted quite a few of the famous cakes at Magnolia Bakery in NYC I can concur that Poppy Cakes are in fact up to the mark.

With flavours ranging from classic vanilla, red velvet, and chocolate through to seasonal pumpkin and maple and salted caramel, the flavours and textures are consistently delish! My personal favourite is the chocolate passionfruit – yum! For my GF friends they also do some low gluten options (GF ingredients but baked in the same kitchen). Poppy Cakes also sells cookies and whole cakes as well as coffee, hot chocolate and boutique soda pop. There are a few tables for eat in although I generally take cakes home to devour in private!

There are plenty of other cupcakes around Brisbane – what makes these ones special is the fact that the cakes are always soft and spongy, the icing always delicious and layered on in just the right amount. They don’t feel the need to “fancy” up the cakes – the taste speaks for itself.

Poppy Cakes is located in the Emporium in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, which means there is heaps of on site parking and plenty of options if you feel you must eat something savoury prior to devouring cake (really – it is not required)!

Je Voudrais Un Pain Au Chocolat! by Amanda!

I did French in year 8 and “Je Voudrais Un Pain Au Chocolat” is about the only phrase I can remember. Thankfully this phrase has served me well. I have been lucky enough to visit France on two occasions and happily ate chocolate croissants for breakfast every day! No complaints from me!

Brisbane based French bakers and owners Lara Sample and Sebastien Pisasale have opened up their once wholesale only premises to the public. Tucked away in a back street in suburban Newmarket in what’s known affectionately by locals as “The Red Brick Bakery” is a tiny little nook selling divine pastries, sourdoughs, brioches and tarts.  My absolute favorite is their chocolate hazelnut croissant – the perfect balance of flavors, crispiness and softness.  I won’t lie to you – my mouth is watering just writing this!

I work nearby and colleagues and I often go for an afternoon jog around the area (OK so “often” might be exaggerating –  it’s really once a week if we’re lucky). For years we’ve been taunted with the delicious smells wafting from the bakery but never have we been able to taste their wares! Imagine our joy when we discovered we could purchase their tasty treats! Who needs jogging when you’ve got croissants?

You can place orders if you want to make sure they have something specific for you, otherwise I suggest you don’t get there too late – the word is out and the place is getting pretty busy. Just last week they also got an espresso machine so they can also now churn out Merlo coffees to accompany their delights.

Visit: 140 Edmondstone street, Newmarket, 4051 Call:  3162 2468 Open: Fri-Sun 6am – 12 midday Wallet: From $1.50 (mini croissant) to $25 (whole quiche). CASH ONLY.

Homestore Café – by Amanda!

I’ll be up front with you. Homestore Café is our local. We could walk there but we don’t. Don’t judge; I enjoy my breakfast without a side of sweaty thanks very much. This is a family-friendly place that also has a little store in it that sells home wares. I have once purchased a recipe book there on how to cook pizza on the BBQ. Seemed like a great idea and indeed it is! Anyway, I digress.   [Read more…]
