Oriental beauty, breathtaking flavour
I’d like to say it’s my fine foodie radar that draws me to a neighbourhood restaurant on a Wednesday night. But it’s the fairy lights. They hang like vines from the front window – sparkling, twinkling and enticing. And I’m not the only one bewitched. The place is packed.
The Thai are known for their love of beauty and it’s evident everywhere, not just on the walls, adorned with gorgeous statues and paintings worshipping Buddha, but every table has crisp linen tablecloths, shiny engraved silverware and a tea-light candle (okay, it’s one of those fake ones, but still the effect is the same – warmth). However, it is the food that shines. You can wait a long time for a meal here – even mid-week – but the food is prepared fresh every night by a chef who, according to one waitress, is worth his wait (sic) in gold!
Last time I went, we ordered an entrée of Orchid Prawns, which are always crispy, fresh and tasty. Don’t order them takeaway though, as they don’t stay crisp. Our main was Crab Fried Rice (divine!) and Red Curry Seafood. Words cannot do justice – it is the freshest, most delicious Thai food we have ever eaten. That night, our waitress apologised profusely when we left, thanking us for our patience (the waiting), but said she couldn’t possibly tell chef, for fear of upsetting him (and losing him)! She needn’t have bothered – we’ll be back!
