The Fresh Stuff – Jan Powers Farmer’s Markets (Brisbane)

CBD, New Farm, Michelton, Manly; Brisbane – Ok, so I love a good market. My husband, on the other hand, HATES them. I’m talking would-rather-visit-the-dentist-than-go-to-a-market hates them!

So imagine my surprise when I discovered that my baby enjoys markets!! Hurrah! The fact that she wakes me up at the crack of dawn only adds to the perfection as early is always best for market-going!

Jan Powers offers 4 markets across Brisbane – Queen street Brisbane City, New Farm (Powerhouse), Mitchelton and Manly. We frequent the New Farm Powerhouse markets as we combine it with a lovely early morning walk along the river.  The Powerhouse and city markets are weekly, with Manly and Mitchelton occurring twice per month.

These are not a farmers co-op type market so if that’s what you’re looking for then these are not for you. There are of course farmers selling their produce direct (delicious fruit, veges and meat); however, there are also other boutique food merchants hawking their wares! My current obsession is to get breakfast from Alistair McLeod’s stand (Alfreshco) – in particular, his coconut rice bircher. Yum. There’s delicious baked goods, awesome fresh juices, fresh flowers, german sausages … the list goes on! The lovely thing is that you can throw a rug out in the nearby park overlooking the river and enjoy eating your purchases – quite often the fruit I buy never makes it home!

These markets are more of an experience rather than somewhere I would do my weekly grocery shop and they do get insanely busy so in this instance, the early bird really does get the organic, locally grown bee!
