Melbourne CBD – It’s not to do with the fact that we live ‘South of the Border’. It’s not about Melburnians’ supposedly devil-may-care attitudes to driving. No, there’s a Mexican revolution happening in Melbourne. From high-end modern Mexican to Taco Trucks, Mexican food has been given a makeover, and it’s pretty. And fresh.
Touché Hombre is the coolest new kid on the Mexi-block, and the lines out the door of an evening are a testament to this. Hot tip: if you get there late, you have to wait. Sometimes over an hour, so go for an early dinner or weekend lunch if you’re the impatient/starving type like me, or make a plan to put your name down and pop round the corner for a bevvie or two to cleanse the palate while you’re waiting.
It’s pretty hard to miss this place. The walls are adorned with L.A. Latino style street art, and if you’re still having trouble there’s a giant neon Ghostbusters sign waving at you as if to say “Hey, Hombre! Come in, take a load off! have some tequila”.
The food is light and fresh with a modern twist, and is mostly in bite-sized portions, a kind of mexi-tapas style menu designed to share. The menu focuses on a range of soft tortilla tacos with fillings like braised goat, haloumi, slow roasted pork shoulder or soft shell sea crab to delight the senses no matter where you sit on the meat-veg spectrum. There’s also a crash course in tequila with a range of tasting plates and 45 different varieties of tequila available. But that just sounds dangerous to me.
