Fit for a King
Varnish on King is building a reputation – in my own head – as being one of the preferred small bar eating combos in Perth. But for all of its inertia, this small bourbon bar remains a hidden gem for the majority of locals. The frustration of meandering up and down the street in search of the illusive entrance is quickly replaced by a feeling of anticipation and warmth as you descend the flight of stairs past the glassed wine cellar and into the eclectic bar featuring a myriad of bourbon bottles sparkling like lights on a Christmas tree.
Varnish is marketed as a small wine and whiskey bar but one look at the menu will confirm their admiration for bourbon whiskey. Beers are interesting and the wine list is extensive (mainly local and French) but for my liking I’d sample some of the bourbons on offer.
If you’re a relative newby to this bourbon business just ask one of the waiters to make a suggestion. They can match food with bourbons and it may turn out to be one of the best nights you’ve had! The food menu changes regularly to adapt to the seasons – But if you see the duck breast with liver and whiskey cream, drop any notion of fad diets and eat as much of this delight as you can! It’s a big call, but along to Andaluz, I consider Varnish to be the best bar food in Perth.
Give this hidden treasure a go….. It’s worth the effort.
