The Pie’s the Limit
Yatala Pies, mmm … always a favourite destination for us when travelling back from the Gold Coast to Brisbane. If not time for brunch or lunch, then we hit the drive-through and take home some of these iconic Queensland pies. Conveniently located on exit 38 (Yatala North) of the M1 heading north, you take the second exit on the round-about and the shop will be in front of you. Once, you could see the ‘Big Pie’ looming at you from the highway but the growth of vegetation has meant this structure is not as obvious today, merely resting on its crust as part of that strange Aussie obsession with ‘big things’.
The pie shop has been a landmark in the Yatala area for more than 130 years, and still uses its traditional ceramic pie ovens for baking. It’s a well-known institution that does not rely on advertising – and it seems that word-of-mouth is good enough! It seems to be always full of a wide variety of people, not only because of the pies and the drive-through facility, but because they have lots of indoor and outdoor seating, serve a decent coffee, and have a large car park and easily accessible toilets for travellers. A favourite with local tradies, it even has a ‘tradie’ pie on the menu, which is steak, bacon, cheese, tomato and egg. I could never call myself a tradie, but I have had this pie and it is delicious! Another personal fave is the Lamb Coconut Curry pie, and of course you can’t go past a traditional chunky steak offering with of course the mandatory serve of mash and mushy peas (gravy and chips also available).
Then, as if the sky wasn’t the limit in savoury pies, there is also an enticing range of sweet pastries, slices and cakes, including their ‘bursting-at-the-seams’ apple pie and cream which in a family size can be purchased for just over $7. Bargain!
